Since the band's inception in late , The Velvet Teen have traveled the world and challenged the very concept of genre with their eclectic and at times schizophrenic appeal. From the early EPs, which showed prowess in the pop realm, to the dynamic indie jangle of Out of the Fierce Parade , to the romantic strings and quietly political lyrics of Elysium , to the sexually charged whip-it beats of Cum Laude , The Velvet Teen truly have a talent for seducing the masses into a cult-like state, before promptly leaving the faithless with nothing but a Kool-Aid after-taste. The believers, however, will vouch that the experience is well worth the trouble. The band officially made its debut during a brief Icelandic tour, finding founding member Judah Nagler accompanied by electronic arrangements programmed on a portable sequencer.
The Velvet Teen is originally the name of Judah Nagler 's electronic solo project, whose official debut was made during a brief Icelandic tour that began on New Year's Eve, In , during which Nagler and Logan Whitehurst were members of the band Little Tin Frog, the two began meeting in secret to write songs together under the moniker, 'The Secret Band. Whitehurst, who was also an accomplished artist, created the etchings used as the album's artwork. Their second full-length album, Elysium , is a stylistic departure from their previous work, and does not contain any guitar. With a core instrumentation of drums, bass, and piano, other noteworthy elements include string and horn arrangements arranged by Adam Theis, the electronic glitches of "Satre Ringo", and the minute, word epic "Chimera Obscurant. Several months before the release of Elysium , Whitehurst fell ill, was diagnosed with brain cancer , and subsequently left the band to focus on treatment.
